05 Dec 2009:  What to buy the man or woman who has everything

Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? Looking for something unusual for the office Secret Santa?

Unfortunately it’s that time of year when socks, ties, toiletries and gifts are bought with the best of intentions but ultimately end up in drawers unused.

Have you ever considered a treasure hunt? Fresh air, fun and a chance to get a group of mates or work colleagues together in a bit of friendly rivalry.

An X Marks The Spot voucher is an ideal way to buy a treasure hunt while giving the recipient the choice as to when and where they want to go.

Vouchers are redeemable against any of our Mystery Tours.

Vouchers are valid for 6 months from date of issue. This gives the voucher-owner plenty of time to choose which Mystery Tour they want to tackle and to get a small group together and it ensures that when they redeem their voucher they'll get the most current version of their chosen Mystery Tour.

And to make things really easy for you, vouchers can be bought online through this website.

Merry Christmas from X Marks The Spot!

01 Dec 2009:  Beat the taxman to your Christmas party. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Christmas treasure hunts

Is your company saying Bah! Humbug! to the 2009 Christmas party due to lack of funds?

Do you know that the UK Government allows all UK companies to claim £150 including VAT per employee per year for staff entertainment? If your company is profitable, then you could be missing out.

Making use of the corporate entertainment tax allowance enables your company to claim for the cost of your staff party – otherwise that money goes straight to the taxman. Why let him party when it could be you?! Perhaps it’s time for you to have a word with your Finance department to encourage them to have a close look at www.hmrc.gov.uk ?

So, having sorted out the funding then the next question is what are you going to do for this year’s bash?

With the festive season upon us, X Marks The Spot has given its popular London ready-made treasure hunts a Christmas twist.

Christmas themed treasure hunts are available in the West End and City of London, so why not go sleuthing with colleagues and friends and complete your celebrations with your office Christmas dinner or drinks?

Simply book online on our website or call us. Prices start at under £10 per person. And for a small supplement, we can customise the event with your company logo and even tailor the clues to reveal the name of the pub or restaurant as your final destination. What an incentive to solve the clues! Call us on 07801 693001.

Whichever treasure hunt you choose, you’ll still have plenty of change from that corporate entertainment allowance for drinks and meals.

Who’d have thought we’d be toasting Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs this Christmas? Cheers!

25 Nov 2009:  First for Visit London

Visit LondonX Marks The Spot has teamed up with Visit London, the official visitor organisation for London. X Marks The Spot treasure hunts will now be marketed worldwide by Visit London and available for sale online through www.visitlondon.com. It’s the first time that Visit London has promoted treasure hunts to both leisure and corporate customers.

Commenting on the first, Visit London’s Business Development Manager Stepan Bedelian said: “Our aim is to promote London as the world's most exciting city by marketing to domestic and overseas leisure and business visitors, as well as Londoners. We see X Marks The Spot and their innovative treasure hunts and mystery tours as a perfect fit for anyone wanting to explore our great city, be it as part of a sales conference, for a hen weekend or as a tourist.”

Brian Cowan, Managing Director of X Marks The Spot added: “Being based in London we live and breathe the capital and love showing others what it has to offer through our treasure hunts. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Visit London. It’s a win-win. Visit London will enable us to attract more customers from more places and those visitors will spend money on accommodation, food, tourist attractions and so on. That is good news for London’s economy.”

14 Nov 2009:  Going, Going, Gone for Charity

St Katherine's ParmoorSet in 12 acres in the beautiful Chiltern countryside near Henley-on-Thames, St Katherine’s of Parmoor is run by the Sue Ryder Fellowship, an independent registered charity whose aim is to provide a non-profit-making retreat that is ecumenical and non-denominational.

X Marks The Spot was delighted to be able to help St Katherine’s in their bid to raise much-needed charitable funds to create a tranquil walled garden for its visitors.

In fact, ‘bid’ was the operative word at St Katherine’s highly successful black-tie fund-raiser where a delicious charity dinner in the banqueting hall was followed by a lively auction of donated lots.

One of our popular European treasure hunts went under the hammer alongside England rugby tickets, a day go-karting with celebrities and a role as an extra in Midsomer Murders.

Treasure hunts for charity, good causes and fund raising.

11 Nov 2009:  Tall tales from Denmark

MicrosoftOnce upon a time, there were 45 Human Resources Managers from Microsoft who were planning a  conference in Copenhagen.

Little Mermaid, Copenhagen“What shall we do?” said Bill, a bit perplexed. “Three days of strategising about teamwork in Copenhagen and we won’t even get to see the Little Mermaid”.

“I agree” said Nina. “Tied to our desktops with only Internet Explorer to keep us company”.

“That’s it!” exclaimed Lindsey gleefully. “Why don’t we combine the lot! We could explore in teams in Copenhagen and multitask with some strategic thinking at the same time?”

“Sounds great in theory”, said Bill, “But we’ll need expert help to design something special”. “And that won’t be easy to find”, he added ruefully.

It was clear that Bill had realised that rebooting simply wasn’t the answer this time.

Two days went by as they looked for help. They searched high and low, even on MSN. Suddenly, Bill exclaimed “We’re here! X Marks The Spot”.

The rest is history.

In a storyline that Hans Christian Andersen himself would have been proud of, our humble group of Human Resources managers gave a fairytale performance in their Copenhagen treasure hunt.

But how the winning team discovered the secret entrance to the storywriter’s former home behind the electrical appliances of a well-known Copenhagen department store, remains a mystery….

Everyone enjoyed the day, enabling Bill, Lindsey and Nina to live Happily Ever After.

The End.

14 Feb 2009:  A match made in...    Vienna

Love was in the air as Rishi asked X Marks The Spot to put together a special St. Valentine’s Day treasure hunt so he could pop the question to girlfriend Pratima in Vienna.
St Valentine's Day treasure hunt
The couple met while studying in the Austrian capital and we played Cupid by tailoring the clues to the couple’s interests and their favourite places in Vienna thanks to Rishi’s input.

By coincidence, we were already in Vienna preparing a corporate treasure hunt. So we were able to give a surprisingly laid-back Rishi his treasure hunt in person on Valentine’s morning as he nipped out on his own on the pretence of getting croissants for breakfast!

Naturally, we didn’t hang around to play gooseberry, but were pleased to learn later that the hunt finished and that life together began following Rishi’s romantic proposal in Café Central.

Congratulations Rishi and Pratima!
